How do you pick great lighting? What does this all mean?
It is called layered lighting and it is very important as it can set the whole mood and look to your home. Lighting is everything! Think about it! Without light, we can’t see anything. No color, no objects, nothing! So, lighting is a big deal and when done well, it will make all the other items in your home look awesome. This is really important and I am not being dramatic, but, this is something that has made all my other efforts in designing a clients home all the worth while!
Layered lighting is exactly what it says. Layered means multiples of different types of lights. Table Lamps, Floor Lamps, Ceiling Fixtures etc. etc. etc. Make sure to use as many of these different types of lighting as possible around each room. Besides placing table lamps on furniture, don’t forget to place floor lamps on your floor, wall sconces on your walls and chandeliers or pendant lights on your ceiling.
Consult with your electrician and lighting store expert to help your with your choices. Use inspiration images to show them to stay on track. After you have the esthetic direction you want to go in, then call in your electrician and see how much wattage you can add to your panel and if you are able to place those items where you want them. Then make your purchases.
I strongly advise bringing in an interior designer on board, even if it is only just for an hour or two consultation to guide you with the design and placement of your beautiful lighting. You can do most of the work and save money, but it is worth the design expert that can save you possible thousands of dollars in errors or regretful lighting design decisions!
