Color Combinations That Make A Room Exciting!
Color Combinations That Make A Room Exciting!
I want to share with you my personal experience and opinions on color, and how I go by how to apply it into a room.
When the right color and color combinations are used wisely in a room, it is truly beautiful and impactful. But, choosing color can be a very difficult task, as seems to be with all things related to interior design!
Color, affects our emotions more than we tend to give it thought! I learned in school from my studies, that certain colors can cause your eye to vibrate. All, I know is when I see beautiful color, it makes me happy and puts me into a good frame of mind! Nature is one of them!
So, how do you go about choosing the right color or color combination that will work for your room? My experience is as always to always go thru a personal step by step methodical process. This process always works with the end result looking like a professionally designed room!
First, consider which room you are going to decorate. The type of room and its use is important to consider. Formal dining rooms, you might want to go dark and dramatic. For a kitchen you might want to go light and bright. For a bathroom or bedroom you might want to incorporate a soft sky color that will relax you. For a powder room, this is an opportunity to go bold and dramatic! For a family room you might want to stick to shades of neutral colors that allows the family to sit, visit and relax.
Second find inspirational images of the same type of room, that you are designing. Or search out images on Pinterest, Google Images, Instagram, magazines, shopping malls, boutique hotels and friends homes. It is time consuming, but, worth every ounce of energy. There is not just one best color or color combination for everyone. We all have different likes and dislikes and you will find out what your personal color palette preferences will be thru this process.
Third, choose your color palette. If it is multiple colors, choose an item that has those multiple colors like a fabric swatch, pillow, ottoman, drapes, upholstery or even your favorite blouse, dress or scarf.
You will quickly discover if you are more achromatic (non-color’s such as beige, brown, black, white, cream) or monochromatic (one color, like blue or brown). But, you might be drawn to rooms with bright multiple color combinations that can be on the color chart. But, I don’t want this to be too complicated for you, so, just follow the combination color scheme in the object or image that you are drawn to wether it is one color or multiple colors.
Next, decide if you are a high contrast or low contrast lover of a room. You do this buy the images you selected and the rooms you have been in. High contrast is where there is a lot of distance between the light and dark objects in a room. For example, a white sofa against a dark chocolate wall or a cream area rug sitting on top of a dark wood floor. This is high contrast, as to where the opposite is low contrast. An example of this would be a cream sofa against a soft light blue wall with pale blue and white pillows. Or a sofa or chair that is sitting on a light area rug that or wood floor.
What does high contrast do for a room? It adds drama and interest. A low contrast room, tends to be calm and the observer feels more peaceful when in that room. Low contrast can be more feminine where high contrast can make a room more hard edged and masculine.
*A designer tip! Try to add a little of black and a little of white in an object of piece of lighting, furniture or art to each room that you design wether low or high contrast or what color palette you choose.
Ok, now what???? What if you love bright colors and lots of them? First, you need to ground those color choices with large objects that are made of wood. Coffee tables, side tables, wood floors. Also, incorporate some neutral colors (beige, brown, cream, grey, white, tan) in with the bright color choices, this way your room will not look like a circus, unless that is the look you are going for, and that is ok too.
* A Designer Tip! Mixing different wood finishes in different pieces of furniture add warmth to a room. Matching all the exact same finishes, makes a room look cheap and contrived.
Fourth, Find the lead color or color combination and take it with you shopping! Meaning let that object be the starting point and follow thru for your design. Travel with it all times when shopping. In fact, have a notebook with your inspiration images, floor plan and shopping list and carry it with you everywhere.
If you see a picture of a room that suits you perfectly then follow it as close as possible. Don’t worry, it will not be the exact look when you are done with your room. Your room is configured differently and it is unrealistic to find the exact objects. Just find the closest looking items that are in the style and colors you love.
Take your cues from the inspiration image you selected and study that image on how they brought balance to the room. Make a mental note of where they repeated the same or similar color on objects thru out the room. Also, take note on where they grounded the room with the natural colors and what pieces they put those colors on.
Ok, so there you go! Be brave and go for it! I will attach some samples of colorful rooms that I love and I will describe the color scheme and why I think that room works! This should even give you more confidence to take the leap of having an amazing room full of beautiful color!
